Social Justice
The preaching mission of Akron Dominicans includes the struggle for social justice in as many ways as community resources and personnel
permit. These efforts have included an extraordinary range of ministries and services to minority communities in several dioceses. Particular efforts have been made to be present to the Hispanic and African-American communities in Cleveland, to battered women's shelters and drug rehabilitation centers, to the poor in Portage and Summit counties, to the sick and elderly in area retirement and health centers, and to the educationally disadvantaged in local schools. Akron Dominicans have been instrumental in founding clothing centers, hunger centers, and social service agencies in two counties.
Akron Dominican sisters have served as missionaries in El Salvador and Guatemala, and have supported national and international efforts to end trafficking, conserve water, save the environment, and support immigrants and low wage workers. For further information contact Mariellen Phelps
