Sister Yvonne Horning, OP
Sister Yvonne Horning, the former Alice Horning, entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron on August 15, 1958 from St. Joseph Parish, Randolph, Ohio. She began her teaching career in 1962 at Immaculate Conception School, Ravenna. She also taught at St. Dominic, Youngstown; St. Mary, Wooster; St. Gabriel, Mentor; and St. Augustine, Barberton. She received her BSE and MSE in Religious Education from St. John College, Cleveland. In 1981 she received an Advanced Certificate from the Youngstown Diocese to be a Leader of Prayer and in 1995 became certified in Pastoral Ministry from the Center for Pastoral Leadership, Wickliffe, Ohio. Sister Yvonne taught religion in the upper grades at St. Hilary, Akron; St. Agnes, Orville; and also at Our Lady of the Elms High School. From 1978-91 she was director of religious education and pastoral assistant at St. William, Champion; and was pastoral associate at Regina Coeli, Alliance from 1995-2005. Presently, she is DRE at St. James, Warren. From 1991-1995 she served as secretary for the congregation. Sister Yvonne also served as a member of the Admission & Formation Commission, Community & Spiritual Life Commission and was a delegate to the congregation’s chapter.
Sister Andre Kravec, OP
Sister Andre Kravec, formerly Florence Kravec, entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron on August 15, 1958 from Annunciation Parish, Akron.
She received her BSE from St. John College, Cleveland; MSE in Administration from Kent State University; MS
in Religious Studies from John Carroll University, Cleveland; CPE Training from Medical Health Institute, Independence, Iowa; and Certification in Preaching from Aquinas Institute, St. Louis, MO. From 1960-72, she taught at St. Felicitas, Cleveland; Immaculate Conception, Ravenna; and St. Joseph and Regina Coeli, Alliance. From 1984-87, she was principal at Our Lady of the Elms Elementary School. Beginning in 1972, she has served as director of religious education and/or pastoral minister at Immaculate Conception, Ravenna; Sacred Heart, Youngstown; Our Lady of Peace, Canton; St. Benedict, Cambridge, Ohio; and St. Louis, Louisville, Ohio. Since 1998, Sister Andre has been pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Sister Andre recently accepted the position of pastoral associate at Immaculate Conception Parish in Claflin, Kansas. She has served as spiritual director for the Akron Dominican Associates and on several committees.
Sister Joanne Caniglia, OP
Sister Joanne Caniglia, daughter of John and Celeste Caniglia, entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Akron on
July 25, 1980 from St. James Parish, Warren, Ohio. She received her BSE in mathematics from John Carroll University and MSE in mathematics from Youngstown State University. Sister Joanne began her teaching career
at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. While at Our Lady of the Elms High School, she taught math and headed that department, taught computer science and did recruitment. After receiving her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University in 1994, she became Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Mathematics at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. Sister Joanne became Professor and Teacher Education Coordinator in the College of Arts and Science at Eastern. While there, she was successful in obtaining several grants to instruct teachers how to teach math in the inner city of Detroit and has won several awards for her work. Presently, Sister Joanne is Associate Professor of Mathematic Education at Kent State University. She has been a member of our Elms School Board of Trustees since 1991 and has been elected several times to serve as a member of the congregation’s board of elections and chapters. Sister Joanne is presently chairperson of the Cluster/Union’s Constitution Committee.
